In this Meet the Community Builders I am delighted to chat to Andy Piper.

Andy is Head of Communications at Mastodon. Andy has built communities at IBM, Twitter and elsewhere and community led growth is at the heart of his work at Mastodon, the fast growing, de-centralized social networking platform.

Like many other community experts, Andy is generous with his community experience and lessons learned. And he also gives an excellent explanation about the Fediverse, what Mastodon is, how you can find communities on there and how it could be a part of your marketing, communications and community strategy.

It is a must-watch for anyone interested in community building or those leading on community strategy.

We discuss:

  • Andy's route in to community building

  • What community means to him - definitions of community

  • Andy explains what Mastodon and the Fediverse is, how to find communities on the platform and where Mastodon sits in the community ecosystem

  • Successes and learnings in building communities, including a salutary lesson about becoming too close to the community and the importance of stepping back to regain perspective

  • How he measures success in communities

  • How to increase community engagement

  • Favourite communities that Andy has been a member of

  • Famous people Andy would love to have in his community

And if you’re interested in joining Mastodon and making it part of your community ecosystem, then do read this excellent article about Mastodon’s principles and it's operating and governance structures.

Enjoy!
